Why did you decide to serve as a volunteer mentor with SCORE?
I decided to volunteer with SCORE several years before I retired. I knew that I would be exiting the business while still relatively young (age 52). I still had the need to be connected to the business world, and love working with creative, enthusiastic people. Also, I was mentored many times during my corporate career and as a small business owner. I owe those folks so much and so mentoring is my way of paying forward.
Times are changing rapidly but basic business acumen will never change.
What has been your greatest area of fulfillment you’ve received since starting your mentorship service with SCORE?
Being connected to people who are business oriented. Listening to all the wonderful ideas that clients have "run past me". Sometimes they just want someone to talk to who doesn't think they're losing it.
Entrepreneurs often refer to “a-ha moments” when being mentored by SCORE volunteers. What was a recent a-ha moment one of our clients had that you think will have an impact on the success of his or her future endeavors?
A client asked about marketing/product promotion as so many do. Her product is what I would call a lifestyle brand so, I suggested she write a brief 2 paragraph press release and contact the editors of several local print and broadcast media outlets. She emailed me to say thanks for the suggestion and to watch Channel 7 News that evening. To my surprise, there she was being interviewed. She was also featured in a trade magazine.
